Twenty-five years after Erwight's defeat, the Orc shaman Gorzod Greyswings summons the demon Xaroth. Master Drobal finds references to seven artifacts that can stop him. Quick Book FAQ

  • Is prior knowledge required? You can begin with this volume. Legacy of the Elves is recommended because it introduces the companions, the Book of Wetherid, and the first war.
  • What is the tone? Classic adventure and companion fantasy is combined with a succession struggle, betrayal, and civil war. The central threat and the heroic moral framework remain clear.
  • Does Volume 1 have a complete ending? The volume completes the first stage of the artifact quest, but the story of Cycle II continues.
  • Reading order: Continue with Guardians of the Seven Artifacts, Volume 2.

Gorzod Greyswings summons Xaroth from the soul realm. The demon demands Queen Lythinda of Astinhod as his first victim.

About twenty-five years after the victory over Erwight of Entorbis, the former companions live in a Wetherid that appears to be at peace. In Raga Gur, the Orc shaman Gorzod Greyswings ends that peace. He treats with Xaroth, the World-Burner, and pledges to deliver souls to the demon.

On Horunguth, Master Drobal recognizes the new danger. Ancient writings name seven artifacts that were created to oppose powers from the soul realm. The first trail leads to the Crystal of Sight in the Northland. Gorathdin, Vrenli, Werlis, Aarl and Borlix set out, unaware that a plot against Queen Lythinda and army commander Arkondir is already underway in Astinhod.

In the Northland, they are joined by the Northland Guardian Thorgar. The search takes them through Grandok, Lake Ymirgard, the abandoned Shieldwall, and Thronheim. Ice rays, snow goblins, a frost golem, the spirit of Høvding Grengor, and the Frost Elves’ plans for war force the companions to reconsider their route and their alliances again and again.

At the same time, Astinhod’s political order begins to collapse. After the murders at court, the members of the Regency Council fight over who will guard the throne. Grand Duke Aldion mobilizes his army, Lady Merdiva manipulates votes and evidence, and Master Drobal must decide how long he can defend the capital without abandoning the search for the artifacts.

The volume develops two equally important conflicts in parallel: the expedition into the North and the struggle for power in Astinhod. Every advance made by the companions is matched by another loss of political control at home.

The Central Characters

  • Gorathdin: Half-elf, husband of Queen Lythinda, and leader of the expedition into the Northland.
  • Vrenli: An Abkether and guardian of the Book of Wetherid; ancient texts and records are part of his duty.
  • Werlis: A one-armed warrior from Abketh and a veteran of the first war against Erwight.
  • Aarl: A warrior from Thir and Gorathdin’s long-standing companion.
  • Borlix: A dwarf from Ib’Agier, an experienced fighter, and an expert on dwarven structures and mountain terrain.
  • Thorgar: A Northland Guardian who leads the companions through a land none of them knows.
  • Master Drobal: A mage of Horunguth who recognizes the importance of the artifacts while intervening in Astinhod’s struggle for power.
  • Gorzod, Aldion, and Lady Merdiva: Three opponents with different aims: demonic power, rule over Astinhod, and personal influence.

What Defines Volume 1

  • The companions return: The heroes of Cycle I return about twenty-five years later, now carrying offices, families, and obligations.
  • Two parallel fronts: The artifact quest in the Northland and the succession struggle in Astinhod develop at the same time and shape the same war.
  • The Northland as a distinct setting: Grandok, the Shieldwall, Ymirgard, Thronheim, and the Frost Elves have their own rulers, history, and conflicts.
  • A step-by-step quest: Clues, trials, ancient chronicles, and political information lead the companions step by step toward the first artifact.
  • The opening of a five-volume cycle: Volume 1 reaches a major stage of the quest and leads directly to the next trail.

Comparable Authors and Series

These comparisons concern cycle structure, the return of earlier heroes, the artifact quest, the parallel political plot, and the transition into a war involving several realms. They do not claim identical prose, character voices, or world order.

Tad Williams

The Last King of Osten Ard

The strongest comparison for the sequel structure: decades after an earlier victory, familiar heroes return in changed roles. An old threat rises again while political tensions weaken realms that appeared secure. Wetherid tells the story more directly and ties the new conflict to a specific artifact quest.

Richard Schwartz

The Secret of Askir / The Gods' Wars

An adult group of companions travels through different realms, seeking knowledge and means to resist a greater power while becoming involved in political alliances. Wetherid places greater emphasis on the return of the same heroes and the simultaneous crisis in their homeland.

John Gwynne

The Faithful and the Fallen

Several realms, betrayal, military mobilization, and a clear supernatural threat develop at the same time. The combination of classic heroism and severe political consequences. Gwynne focuses more strongly on warrior families and campaigns; Wetherid on older companions and seven artifacts.

R. A. Salvatore

The DemonWars Saga

A demon threatens several peoples while companions and mages search for the means to stop him. Magical objects, travel episodes, and the danger of war are closely connected. Salvatore develops combat technique and magic more systematically; Wetherid gives more space to councils, succession, and regional politics.

Raymond E. Feist

The Serpentwar Saga

After earlier victories, a new war begins across several fronts. Infiltration, military buildup, alliances, and political preparation all serve the same conflict. Wetherid begins this cycle more clearly as an expedition while allowing Astinhod’s collapse to grow alongside it.

Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman

Dragonlance: The War of Souls

The comparison concerns a return to a familiar world after an earlier victory: former heroes, a changed order, and a new dark power. Wetherid keeps the original companions more closely connected and makes the search for seven artifacts the central narrative path.
